When Jesus started to perform this task His disciples expressed strong objections. Their Master was not supposed to be washing anyone's feet, just as they were not supposed to perform this task. This was the task of servants. But Jesus insisted, tell the disciples that if they were to follow HIm, they should not be too proud to serve other people.
We need to learn humility in serving others and to recall that Jesus came into the world to serve and not to be served. As we remember our call to servanthood, we place this basin and towel before the cross.
Bible reading: John 13:5-7
After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?” Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”
"Dear God, help us to raise our thoughts and actions beyond ourselves to the concern and care of other people - known and unknown to us. Amen.
